Police are calling a 13-year-old Detroit boy a hero after he used a piece of wood to knock his 14-year-old friend off a live wire as the teen was being shocked this morning, Tammy Stables Battaglia reports in the Free Press.

The 14-year-old arrived at DMC Sinai-Grace Hospital with a faint pulse and was in critical condition at 10 a.m., Detroit Police Sgt. Michael Woody said. The 13-year-old was unharmed.

“(He) grabbed a 2-by-4 and knocked the boy off the wire, and potentially saved the boy’s life,” Woody said. “He’s a hero today.”

The boys were walking home from school with two other neighborhood children this morning when they came across the downed wires near Marlowe and Lyndon, east of Grand River and Greenfield, just after 8 a.m., Woody said.
