Michigan State University has agreed to pay $5 million each to three families of students who were murdered by a gunman on campus in February.

The settlement on the lawsuits comes after the families alleged that there were security lapses on campus, the Washington Post reports.

Three students were killed and five others injured. The gunman, Anthony Dwayne McRae, 43, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound shortly after the rampage on campus.

McRae killed students Arielle Anderson and Alexandria Verner in Berkey Hall and then fatally shot Brian Fraser outside the student union.

“The university gives its deepest condolences to each of the three families and we are committed to ensuring the memory of their child is not forgotten in this Spartan community,” Dan Kelly, an MSU board of trustte,  said in a statement Friday announcing the settlement. “We honor the memories of those we lost by working tirelessly to create an environment where safety and the well-being of our community is a top priority.”
