An estimated 5,000 bicyclists are expected to participate in Saturday's "Tour de Troit," an event that features a route that cuts through neighborhoods and heads to city gems and thriving business districts.

The route will be closed to car traffic — a first. The City of Detroit approved the closed course, blocking off roads for the duration of the ride. And because no cars can enter the course, riders don't need a police escort.

The event offers two routes — one for the recreational rider and the experienced peddler. The leisure course runs 30 miles while the alternative course, the sold-out Metric Century, is 62 miles. Both courses will start and end at Detroit's Roosevelt Park in front of the Michigan Central rail station.

Event registration for the leisure course and sign-in for both courses will begin at 7:30 a.m. And those in need of sustenance prior to the ride can pick up yogurt parfaits provided by McDonald'sandjava from Great Lakes Coffee.
