A 6-year-old girl was accidentally shot in the head and died inside a parked car in the parking lot of a strip mall at Gratiot and Harper on Detroit's east side Monday just after noon, Fox 2 reports.
Police said an unsecured weapon was used.
The girl was among five children left alone inside the vehicle with a loaded gun by their mother, who went into a restaurant to pick up food, said First Assistant Detroit Police Chief Charles Fitzgerald, according to Fox 2.
"At some point in time one of the kids tried to grab her, but it was a little too late. One of the kids was shot in the head with an unsecured weapon," he said. "These things are so preventable."
He said police are still trying to determine what happened and will eventually present the findings to to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office.
