A family outing at Independence Lake in Whitemore Lake, some 9 miles north of Ann Arbor, turned tragic Saturday.
Erika Erickson of Fox 2 reports that Deshaun Jackson, 23, had gone with family to a barbecue and wanted to go in the water even though he couldn't swim. Family members say Jackson, who has a learning disability, disappeared and after a 45-minute search, crews found he had drowned in the swimming area.
"Our family is hurting," cousin Wendy Harmon told Fox 2. "We're all hurting."
She said he never had a bad day in his life.
