It was billed as a first: The first time there was a forum on how to prevent community violence inside a Michigan prison.

Sponsored by the Detroit Free Press, the forum at the Ryan Correctional Facility in Detroit  included hardened inmates, social workers, sociologists, Detroit Police Chief Ralph Godbee Jr. and Mayor Dave Bing.

“We need to show the youth that this uniform is not a badge of honor,” said inmate Darryl Woods, according to the Freep. “It’s a badge of shame. I want every man wearing this blue and orange to stand up because we apologize for the pain we have caused." -- A.L.
