Some of Detroit's and Hamtramck's once-thriving Catholic parishes sit near-empty and some are on the Archdiocese’s chopping block.

But one Sunday a month, a movement called the "Detroit Mass Mob" gathers over a thousand Metro Detroiters to worship at a forgotten church in Detroit or Hamtramck, reports Nicholas G. Hahn III of The Detroit News.

Anthony Battaglia, a co-founder of the movement tells the News it's not about saving the churches from closure, but rather: "We just want to get people in the pews."

“What a wonderful idea to visit these historic churches,” Archbishop Allen Vigneron’ said in a special video greeting, “to experience their beauty as a way to be renewed in your faith.”

The visits also help the collection cup.

Battaglia tells The News that more than $300,000 has been raised at 24 parishes in Detroit and Hamtramck since April 2014.
