Cmdr. Johnny Thomas of the Midtown precinct was arrested by his own officers for driving under the influence. The department says he hit a stopped car around 12:30 a.m. Saturday, George Hunter of The Detroit News posts:

Thomas, whose blood-alcohol content was reportedly .18 at the scene — more than twice the legal limit, and considered "super drunk" in Michigan — was driving near Mack Avenue and St. Antoine at about 1:30 a.m. Saturday when he allegedly crashed his take-home vehicle into a car that was sitting at a red light, police said

There were three vehicles involved in the accident, which was in Thomas' precinct, police said. The driver of the vehicle at the red light was rushed to Detroit Receiving Hospital where he was treated and released.

Imagine the awkwardness of giving your boss a Breathalyzer test and then arresting him. Makes us wonder if he got the courtesy of no handcuffs.

Thomas, who lives on Detroit's far west side in the Gardenview Estates neighborhood, is placed on restricted duty.
