It took seven tries Tuesday before the Detroit City council re-elected Brenda Jones as its president. She was first elected to the top post in 2014.
Members first voted five times, with each vote resulting in a three-way tie among Jones, Mary Sheffield and Andre Spivey, reports Katrease Stafford of the Detroit Free Press.
Council then voted for the top two contenders via a ranking elimination, that cut it down to Spivey and Jones.
Jones won 5-4, garnering support from Gabe Leland, Sheffield, Roy McCalister, Scott Benson and Jones. Council members Raquel Castañeda-López, Janeé Ayers, James Tate and Andre Spivey voted for Spivey.
"I will continue to service the City of Detroit to the best of my ability," Jones said. "I'm going to work with all of my colleagues. . . . I just want to thank you all again for giving me the opportunity to serve."
Jones was first elected to council in November 2005 and was re-elected to a second term in January 2010.
