After Being Vacant Nearly 40 Years, Downtown Building to Get Makeover

Another downtown building is being revived after standing empty for nearly 40 years.

The Metropolitan, a tall, narrow Gothic-like structure at 33 John R, will get a $32 million makeover and then reopen as an extended-stay hotel with street-level shops, Louis Aguilar writes in The Detroit News.

The historic building, being developed by the Metropolitan Development group, is city-owned after facing possible demolition in 2013.

The name of the national hotel chains slated for the spots has not been released. About 100-130 hotel rooms are planned, The News reports.
