After fires broke out on four streets in one northeast Detroit neighborhood Sunday morning near I-75 and 8 Mile, members of the Detroit Fire Department arrested a middle-aged suspect walking in the area, Patricia Montemurri reports in the Free Press.
Lt. Dennis Richardson, a Detroit arson investigator, said fires were set in four abandoned homes on four streets, starting around 11:15 a.m. Sunday. Two of the fires, one on Hull and one on Hawthorne, spread to adjacent homes and the occupied home on Hawthorne was destroyed. Fires also were set in vacant homes on Greeley and Russell streets just south of Eight Mile. Nobody was injured.
Helped by descriptions and even photos from residents, Richardson, arson investigator Lt. Matthew Crouch and Lt. Jamal Mayers nabbed the suspect after a two-block chase.
WXYZ-TV reports fire crews also had problems with hydrants that were frozen and broken. The fire on Hawthorne spread from one house to another, destroying both homes.
