Never one to not take himself too seriously, parole-violating Kwame Kilpatrick quoted apartheid-fighting Nelson Mandela as Kilpatrick left a Detroit prison Monday after three days inside.
"I have walked that long road to freedom," Kilpatrick posted on his Facebook page.
"I have tried not to falter; I have made missteps along the way. But I have discovered the secret that after climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb. I have taken a moment here to rest...But I can rest only for a moment for with freedom come responsibilities, and I dare not linger, for my long walk is not yet ended. -Nelson Mandela
He added: "MUCH LOVE AND THANX DEAR FAMILY! YOUR WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT AND PRAYERS AVAILETH MUCH."
Availeth much?
Kilpatrick was locked up Friday for violating parole in the 2008 perjury case that caused him to resign as Detroit mayor.
The weekend behind bars was a break from U.S. District Court, where Kilpatrick is on trial on corruption charges.
The Michigan Department of Corrections said Kilpatrick committed 14 violations related to his failure to report certain financial transactions last fall, especially money transfers to his wife, Carlita.
Kilpatrick agreed to waive the formal process for parole violations and instead serve three days at a Detroit lockup as punishment, Corrections Department spokesman Russ Marlan said.
Mandela was imprisoned in South Africa for 27 years for fighting the nation's apartheid system.
