The former Hotel Charlevoix finally has a date with the wrecking ball.

Louis Aguilar of the Detroit News reports crew could tear into the 11-story building, at Grand Circus Park and Park,  as early as Monday.

The Charlevoix, at the southwest corner of Park Avenue and Elizabeth Street, was labeled dangerous a decade ago, when bricks and shards of glass began falling off, according to court documents. Built in 1905, it has been empty since 1983, according to court documents. Sachs will be billed for the demolition.

Owner Ralph Sachs bought the building in 1975 when it had just three tenants, according to legal documents. By 1983, it was empty, as the city's downtown district hit a period of real estate decline. The Charlevoix was quickly stripped of most everything that was worth something: its ornate staircase, its wiring, plumbing, windows and flooring.
