Sure, maybe Joseph Louis Carter robbed a Clinton Township bank. No one is condoning that. At the same time, you have to look at the man's full record. He's an expectant father. Also, he didn't use a real gun to pull of his heist--assuming he actually did it, a fact to be decided by a jury--Carter says he only had a BB gun. That's why Carter thought he totally deserved bail. A federal judge thought otherwise.
Macomb Daily: “His actions...wantonly endangered the lives of the teller and other innocent persons, and reflects extremely poorly on his character,” U.S. Magistrate Judge David R. Grand wrote in ordering the suspect be detained.
Carter, 26, of Detroit, was arraigned last week in U.S. District Court on charges of bank robbery and brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence in connection with the Oct. 9 holdup of a Huntington Bank branch on Harper Avenue near 15 Mile Road in Clinton Township.
Carter stole $9,000 from the bank after brandishing the BB gun, which tellers thought was a semi-automatic handgun. The reportedly has prior convictions for unarmed robbery, car theft, and weapons violations.
