Mike Duggan appears to have swept up victories in 94 percent of the city’s voting precincts in his stunning win over Benny Napoleon in Tuesday’s mayoral primary, Matt Helms and Kristi Tanner report in the Free Press.
The paper's analysis of unofficial results shows that write-in votes, the vast majority for Duggan, the former Detroit Medical Center CEO, carried 574 Detroit precincts of 611 precincts citywide.
The analysis also shows that Duggan won in 486 precincts by a margin of 10% or more, 335 precincts by 20% or more and 162 precincts by 30% or more. Duggan also won 61 precincts by a margin of 40% or more and 39 precincts by 50% or more, the analysis shows.
Duggan's campaign manager, Brian Barnhill, says those figures confirm broad support for his candidate. "This is not a neighborhood thing. This is not a class thing. It's not much of a race thing," he told Alexis Wiley of Fox 2.
Napoleon won in 32 voting precincts in his bid to replace Mayor Dave Bing, who is not seeking re-election.
