Update:  Tuesday, 2:23 p.m.-- The Detroit News reports that Snyder will delay his trip and leave Wednesday instead of today, so he can deal with Medicaid expansion bill before state lawmakers.

Gov. Rick Snyder hopes to slap a smiley face on top of any question marks about Detroit's bankruptcy when he ships off today for a trade mission to China and Japan.

Bryce Hoffman of the Detroit News reports that Snyder will  reassure companies and investors during his trip that Michigan is still a great place to do business despite Detroit's financial woes.

“That is something we know we’ll be asked about quite a bit, and we want to be proactive about responding to that,” Snyder told The Detroit News in a one-on-one interview Tuesday morning. “I’m going to be very proactive and put it in the context of saying Detroit had been declining for 50 or 60 years — this is the opportunity to really see it come back.”

Snyder is going on a 10-day investment mission to scheduled to leave for Asia later Tuesday on a 10-day investment mission that will take him to Shanghai, Chongqing, Tokyo and Beijing, the News reported. -- Allan Lengel
