Ten hurting horses are safe tonight after being rescued from a Detroit warehouse.

Michigan Humane Society Cruelty Investigators, Detroit Animal Control personnel, DTE theft unit staffers and Detroit police rescued the 10 horses, the humane society announced in a statement.

The horses, found in various stages of neglect or poor health, will be cared for temporarily by the International League for the Protection of Horses of Michigan and the humane society.

“It is appalling to see the callousness that some have toward these beautiful animals,” said Debby MacDonald, MHS Chief Cruelty Investigator, said in a statment.

“Thankfully, these horses will not have to suffer without care any longer. We are very thankful to our partners on this rescue, because without them, these horses would not be in a safe place receiving lifesaving medical treatment.”

Horse are rare sights in Detroit; it was not known why the horses were in the warehouse, or who put them there

Costs of care for the horses could be tens of thousands of dollars, the humane society said.
