Sharlonda Buckman

It seems we're suddenly hearing a lot about carjackings in Detroit -- or at least more than usual in the past few days.

First, Detroit Police Chief James Craig said he was almost carjacked, but he gunned the car pedal and took off before anything could happen. That response, which he shared publicly, brought on some criticism from some citizens who thought he should have stood his ground.

It also got national attention and put the chief on the defensive, telling people he did the right thing. He called into WCHB Thursday morning to defend himself.

Let's face it, Detroit is looking for a super hero to fight crime. Right or wrong, Craig looked pretty mortal.

Now we hear about this.

Media outlets were reporting a carjacker shot and wounded a man Thursday morning.

The incident began when  Sharlonda Buckman, a 2013 Michiganian of the Year and chief executive officer of Detroit Parent Network,  stopped about 8 a.m. at a BP gas station on the 10700 block of East Jefferson Avenue on the city's east side to buy some aspirin, Maria Daniels of the Detroit News reported.

An armed man forced her to give up her 2011 Chevrolet Traverse.

Police said a witness followed the carjacker in a 2009 blue Ford Focus. The two cars wound up at the Edison Boat Club, and the carjacker ditched the SUV into a shallow canal, the News reported.

The carjacker and the other man exchanged gunfire. The carjacker ended shooting the man in the arm before fleeing.
