Mayor Dave Bing announced this morning that Detroit Police Chief Ralph Godbee, who was embroiled in a sex scandal that only seemed to be getting worse by the day, has retired immediately, the Detroit Free Press reported.
Godbee was the third police chief in three years.
The Freep reported that Bing said he met with Godbee on Sunday, but didn't force him to resign.
"I think this was the right decision by the chief," Bing said. "I support it."
Bing suspended Godbee for 30 days last week after a sexual scandal surfaced.
A female cop in internal affairs started tweeting about their year-long affair after she learned that the chief had gone to San Diego with another woman for a police chiefs conference.
After all that, Fox2 reported that a woman claimed she had sex with Godbee in exchange for a promotion.
Bing indicated last week that there would be an investigation into the matter.
Any way you slice it, it's a mess.
