Three people, including two children, are dead from a massive pileup crash involving 30 vehicles during Thursday morning rush hour, closing Interstate 75 near Springwells and prompting an emergency request for 20 ambulances, the Detroit News reports.
The massive accident, described as being a "mile long," occurred around 9 a.m. on southbound I-75 from Springwells to Schaefer Highway, forcing the initial closure of both sides — northbound I-75 has since reopened but southbound will remain closed through rush hour.
Motorists in the area at the time of the crash described "whiteout conditions" that caused drivers to lose control of their vehicles. Fenders, glass and other debris from the crash site were scattered across the highway as survivors hugged and shed tears soon afterward.
