Kwame Kilpatrick is still living on the dole.
Robert Snell of the Detroit News reports Kilpatrick has been enjoying a high-flying lifestyle bankrolled by other people while standing trial on corruption charges, but state authorities have begun to question where the money is coming from.
Kilpatrick is flying for free on weekends between his Texas home and Detroit, and until recently was getting comped at a luxury downtown hotel co-owned by a key financial backer, The Detroit News has learned.
Parole officials and the Wayne County Prosecutor have launched new probes of Kilpatrick's oft-scrutinized finances to determine how he is affording the flights and hotel and solve a mystery surrounding money from his 2011 autobiography.
"Nothing is simple with him," state Department of Corrections spokesman Russ Marlan said.
The probes are revealed in interviews and emails Kilpatrick recently sent to his parole agent, which were reviewed by The News following a public records request.
