Avalon International Breads, which has operated a popular bakery on Willis Street in Midtown since 1997, plans to open a bakery and cafe in early 2017 at 1049 Woodward Ave., across from One Campus Martius in downtown Detroit.

Avalon Hearth and Soul will serve baked goods, breakfast, lunch and dinner, owner Jackie Victor tells Deadline Detroit.

Items will include sandwiches, salads, pizza and soups. Dinner offerings will be "simple entrees," she says. Beverages include beer, wine and coffee from Mighty Good Coffee Roasting Co.  in Ann Arbor..

Hours are expected to be around 6 a.m. until 8 p.m. weekdays. It will stay open until around midnight on weekends.

The cafe was originally slated to open in July 2016. "Nothing has gone wrong," Victor says. "Everything has just taken longer than we had hoped."

This business extension follows last summer's opening of the Betline Bakery Outlet at 4731 Bellevue, near Mack Avenue and Mt. Elliott on Detroit's east side. It's a retail shop attached to a production facility opened in 2013.
