The BBC's Matt Danzico visits Challenge Detroit, a professional development program that chose 30 of "tomorrow's leaders" to live, work, play and give in and around Detroit for one year.
He speaks with program president and co-founder Doyle Mosher and participants Marlo Staples (right) and Jason Zogg.
"As an urban planner," says Zogg, "I've read many articles about Detroit being on the leading edge of creating productive landscapes out of vacant lands, and I wanted to be here to be part of that new urban paradigm."
The second annual class of fellows, some of whom are Detroit natives, live and work in the city and also work one day a week on community projects.
They get $500 per month, a job with a local company, coordinated social activities and opportunities to give back through monthly team challenges, Mosher told model D earlier.
