The Detroit River is a gem, but Fox 2's Robin Schwartz points out that we haven't always treated as one, having once dumped sewage, fertilizer and industrial waste directly into the water.
Schwartz reports that the Dossin Great Lakes Museum on Belle Isle is hosting a new exhibit about the river's comeback.
"We polluted it with industrial waste, we polluted it with human waste, we have destroyed habitats for fish, animals and birds," Joel Stone, senior curator with the Detroit Historical Society, tell Fox 2. "Over time, the entire ecosystem got pretty sick."
