Detroit mayoral candidate Benny Napoleon's first TV ad has been released, right about the same time as an ad for his chief opponent, Mike Duggan.

Napoleon's ad shows him sitting on the porch of his mother's home and focuses on his upbringing, saying his parents taught their children they could be anything they wanted.

And then the topic switches rapidly to Detroit.

Without offering any details, he says "together we can make our neighborhoods livable, walkable and sustainable."

He also says "we" can turn poor services into "proud city services" and "blight into beauty."

He is shown with a woman who appears to be his mother and with cute children.

"We owe it to our children," he says, in closing. "We owe it to our parents."

On Facebook, the ad received a negative review from Geoffrey Garfield, who works closely with another candidate, Tom Barrow, who has not released a TV ad yet.

Wrote Garfield:  "Weak presentation. Is the message that he likes playing with kids or sitting on his stoop while the city goes to Hell?"
