Detroit News columnist Laura Berman is trying to uncover the mystery behind the excavation and demolition of a six-block area in  mostly desolate "urban prairie" in Detroit. 

She writes:

Although the half-dozen bulldozers and excavators busily hauling away brush, moving hillocks of tires and demolishing the charred husks of century-old houses may be a welcome sight to the area's few remaining residents, their origins are a mystery.

Given the secrecy surrounding the site — six blocks between St. Aubin and Chene streets, south of Mack — you might think someone is building an atomic bomb rather than beautifying the neighborhood.

What gives?

She writes that city owns land around there. But no one is saying what's going to be built there.
