Birmingham is joining a list of cities in Michigan that don't want pot dispenseries, even though voters in the state on Nov. 6 approved recreational marijuana use.
City commissioners voted 5-0 last week to prohibit the marijuana establishments from cropping up in the city, reports Lisa Brody of the Downtown magazine.
City Manager Joe Valentine said the city has been operating under the Medical Marijuana Facilities Licensing Act, which lets each community decide to allow or prohibit state-licensed marijuana establishments. “Since that was adopted, the city has chosen to not opt in,” Valentine said. “Since the recent ballot initiative, cities have to prohibit it. We have provided an ordinance that these establishments would be prohibited in the city.”
Other cities in Michigan, including Monroe, have also made it clear they don't want pot shops.
