A new baseball season is about to open with fresh dreams, renewed possibilities and a few rookie players at concession stands.

Combine a square Detroit-style pizza with a Detroit coney dog and this is what you get.

Menu newcomers in Detroit include a "Hawaiian" hot dog" with pineapple and jalapeno. a shawarma nacho, a chicken shawarma roll-up, a Cuban press sandwich and a hummus platter with black olives , Brian Manzullo writes at the Freep after tasting samples Thursday afternoon at Comerica Park.

The most bizarre lineup addition is a "Detroit-style" coney pizza, which Little Caesars is trying to make a thing now for $12.50 per deep-dish square pie (four corner slices).

Manzullo describes that mutant hybrid as "a pizza featuring cheese, chili underneath the cheese, mustard, onions and slices of hot dog." He adds what we're thinking:

You know how, sometimes, when you combine two great things it turns into one awful thing? Maybe that's what this is. . . .

Little Caesars is about to find out.

Reacting to the same mash-up, Detroit News reporter Ian Thibodeau comments on Facebook: "New on the Comerica Park menu this year: Colon Blow."

Opening Day at Detroit's ballpark is next Friday, May 7.

Two of last season's new snacks -- queso pork rinds and bacon with deviled eggs -- are gone. But better bring Tums if you'll try the experiment shown here.
