Kwame Kilpatrick's pal and prison mate Bobby Ferguson complained about life behind bars Monday and might need taxpayers to bankroll his defense in a $12-million bid-rigging retrial, Robert Snell reports in The Detroit News.

"I'm in a real bad position," Ferguson, 44, told a federal judge Monday during a hearing where he complained about not having access to a law library and limited phone privileges at the federal prison in Milan. "I have no access to anything."

Ferguson, who prosecutors say received $84 million in corrupt city contracts, is low on money to pay defense lawyers after two costly trials and having millions seized by the government, and might have to ask for a court-appointed attorney.
