Well, the Red Wings barely made it into the playoffs.
And then it became apparent they had no chance to upset the Boston Bruins.
Saturday was the last day of the season for the Wings. They tried. But Boston was far better. The final score Saturday was 4-2.
Here's how Mark Daniels of Mark Daniels of the Boston Herald summed it up on Saturday:
For a moment, it looked like the Bruins date with the Montreal Canadians was put on hold.
As the seconds ticked away, in a 1-1 tied game in the second period, it looked like the Detroit Red Wings might have found some life. But as the period was about to come to a close, the most reliable of Bruins stepped up.
With 3.8 seconds left in the period, Zdeno Chara sent a momentum changing slap shot past Jonas Gustavsson.
There was no turning back after that.
