The original Buddy's Pizza has been at the corner of Conant and McNichols in Detroit since the 1930s when it was a neighborhood tavern. In 1946, it started serving its square pizza.
But to date, the local chain has expanded only in the suburbs.
Now, there's talk of a Buddy's opening in downtown Detroit.
Multiple sources with knowledge of the deal tell Mark Kurlyandchik of the Detroit Free Press that Buddy’s was in talks with Dan Gilbert's Bedrock real estate company to secure the ground-level restaurant space in the Madison Building in the Grand Circus Park area, formerly occupied by Angelina Italian Bistro. It's steps away from Comerica Park.
"Buddy's Pizza is exploring the possibility of opening a downtown Detroit location," Chief Operating Officer Wes Pikula says in a statement from corpo.rate headquarters in Farmington Hills
