The Wayne County Internet Crime Unit has been disbanded and will cease to exist come the beginning of 2014, Ron Savage reports on Fox 2.

The reason: It's not required by the Wayne County Charter.

"However, when that charter was drawn up nobody had heard of the Internet. So, no one has gone back and revised that charter," Corporal Erin Diamond of the Wayne County Sheriff's Department tells Savage. "The unit investigates more than Internet crimes against children, too. They investigate computer-device crime."

The shutdown is part of the county's budget problems, and Sheriff Benny Napoleon's dispute with County Executive Robert Ficano over funding.
