In these days of cost-cutting, global competition, automakers are willing to toss sentiment aside and kill car models.

In this case, General Motors is killing the Chevy Volt, Cruze and Impala, reports Nathan Bomey of USA Today.

The move comes as GM plans to shut down three plants: Detroit, Ohio and Canada.

Customers are increasingly passing on passenger cars in favor of crossovers, SUVs and pickups.

GM will  no longer make the Volt semi-electric car and the Cruze compact sedan for sale in North America beginning in March, and production of the Impala full-size car will end in the U.S. in March and in Canada in the fourth quarter of 2019, Bomey reports.
