The Canadian federal government will unveil their annual budget plan Tuesday and, according to Essex PM Jeff Watson of the ruling Conservative Party, Canada expects to spend big on the planned Detroit-Windsor bridge in the next fiscal year.

Windsor Star: “Clearly the finance minister has indicated major infrastructure projects are going to be contained in the budget,” Watson said. “We also know the No. 1 project for our government — as the prime minister said — is the new bridge for Windsor and Detroit.

“Canada is the chief funder of the project, land acquisition is to start quickly, and to do that you need money. It would be a big surprise if money is not there in the budget to get land acquisition and this project moving forward.”

Canada is reportedly anticipating to spend about $300 million acquiring the land necessary for the border crossing's Michigan footprint as part their $550 million commitment to fund Michigan's portion of the project.

Canada will be repaid from Michigan's share of toll revenues.
