It was only a small window of opportunity, but opportunity enough.

Nikki Smith parked her Ford sedan at a car repair shop in Redford Township Monday morning and got out for a moment. It was then when a stranger  jumped in the car and took off with her two young children, Alexis and Rashad, sleeping in the back seat, Shawn Ley of WDIV reports.

WDIV reports that a shop employee Rick Walsh, the son of the owner, saw the carjacking happen, and he and Smith jumped into a car and gave chase. The man finally stopped the car near Claude Allison Park on Beech Daly Road in Redford Township and got out.

Smith tells WDIV that she confronted the man, who just kept walking.

The carjacker has not been caught.
