Carjackings in Detroit are reaching crisis levels, says Detroit Police Chief Craig James.
City police, the FBI and the US Attorney's office are joining to create a new task force to fight back, reports WWJ. Billboards are up across the city declaring car-jacking a federal crime with long prison terms.
Some federal car jacking charges can carry 15 years per charge, plus an additional 25 years in prison, the News reports.
Additionally, a federal death penalty could be imposed if "the crime involves a gun, involves interstate criminal activity, results in the death of the victim and the carjacker is part of a 'serial' carjacking operation." D.F.
