Sen. Carl Levin was already in Afghanistan, as part of a scheduled trip with fellow Sen. Jake Reed (D-RI), when President Barack Obama arrived this afternoon for his unexpected visit.
Obama and Afghani President Hamid Karzai signed an agreement this afternoon pledging U.S. support for the war-torn nation, essentially, for ten years after American troops are scheduled to withdraw in 2014. Levin told subscribers to his Facebook feed that he was on hand for the signing.
Obama is scheduled to deliver a televised address from Afghanistan tonight to honor the one-year anniversary of the killing of Osama Bin Laden's by Navy SEALS. A Levin spokesperson in Washington said she was unsure is the Senator would attend the address.
