In an obvious reference to President Donald Trump, retired WDIV anchor Carmen Harlan lashes out at the commander-in-chief for attacking the media.

While accepting a 2018 Soul and Spirit Humanitarian Award at federal court in downtown Detroit from U.S. Court of Appeals Judge Damon Keith and U.S. District Denise Page Hood on Wednesday, Harlan said, according to Rochelle Riley of the Detroit Free Press:

"The free press is under siege right now. We’ve got to prove ourselves and be better than we’ve ever been before -- not that we weren't good, because believe me, there wasn’t a story that got by me that I didn't check before it went on the air.

"But to have the kind of leadership that we have today that likes to call out the press and disrespect the press and minimize the contributions of journalists in our democracy is an assault not just on us. But it is an assault on our government. It is an assault on our citizenry, and we can’t tolerate that.

"I’ve retired,” she said, "but a lot of you haven’t, and you know people who are aspiring journalists. Please inspire them to take up the torch."

Harlan was honored at Judge Keith’s 31st annual Soul Food Luncheon, where he spotlights a local hero.
