Ndamukong Suh
Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, in an attempt to dodge questions from local media about his contract and sitting out last week’s win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, repeatedly referred to Detroit Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh as “Donkey Kong Suh” during a 15-minute press conference Thursday, Dave Birkett reports in the Free Press.
“My main focus right now is focusing on the Detroit Lions,” Newton said when asked about missing the Panthers’ opener with a rib injury. “I think I got my hands full trying to find ways to stay protected by Donkey Kong Suh and my fellow Auburn teammate, Nick Fairley.”
Newton, who won a national championship at Auburn with Fairley in 2010, repeated a version of that answer five times Wednesday, using the video-game character nickname when he referred to Suh every time.
Suh, a three-time Pro Bowler who’s called his last name by most teammates, told reporters earlier Wednesday that he’s met Newton “a couple times, but we’re not personally close or anything like that.”
