A juidge Wednesday approved a $700,000 settlement agreement in a drawn-out lawsuit against a Dearborn McDonald’s accused of serving non-halal chicken advertised as halal, Joe Slezak reports in the city's Press & Guide newspaper.
Wayne County Circuit Judge Kathleen Macdonald approved the terms agreed to by attorneys on both sides and dismissed the challenges. . . .
Plaintiff Ahmed Ahmed bought a McChicken sandwich at the McDonald’s at 13158 Ford Road on Sept. 2, 2011. It was advertised as halal, but apparently was not, because the franchise, owned by Finley’s Management Co., ran out of halal chicken.
“Halal” refers to meeting Islamic requirements for preparing food. God’s name must be invoked before an animal providing meat for consumption is slaughtered.
Ahmed receives $20,000 from the settlement. Larger shares go to attorneys and two Muslim community nonprofits:
- Health Unit on Davison Avenue Inc. in Detroit will receive $274,000.
- The Arab American National Museum in Dearborn gets nearly $116,000.
Two McDonald's restaurants in Dearborn are believed to be the only U.S. branches serving halal food, Slezak writes.
