Detroit Police Chief James Craig stepped into the national dialog over the chanting of  ‘Pigs in a blanket — fry ‘em like bacon."

“I’m a police officer, and yes, I’m offended,” Craig told reporters Tuesday, WWJ’s Vickie Thomas reports. “Highly offended; I’ve been in this business 38 years. I am a cop….But we’re not gonna shirk our responsibility to providing the type of police services that we do.”

The chanting came during a “Black Lives Matter” rally outside the Minnesota State Fair over the weekend. WWJ notes that the  protest came hours after a Texas sheriff's deputy Darren Goforth was shot and killed.

Craig said he has concerns about police officers being targeted by killers and said it's time to stand up.

“Because what we’re hearing is the voices of a few,” he said. “And when you say and make comments like ‘pigs in a blanket’ — that is not acceptable…And if you attack one of our officers, we will respond in a very certain way.”
