U.S. District Judge Gerald Rosen

U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Steven Rhodes has turned to veteran Chief U.S. District Judge Gerald Rosen in Detroit to help out with city's massive bankruptcy case.

Rhodes on Tuesday announced the appointment of Chief U.S. District Judge Gerald Rosen to mediate disputes between the city and creditors.

"The judicial mediator is authorized to enter any order necessary for the facilitation of mediation proceedings," Rhodes wrote in a court order. "Chief Judge Rosen may, in his discretion, direct the parties to engage in facilitative mediation on substantive, process and discovery issues, as referred by Judge Rhodes, with such other mediators, judicial or non-judicial, as Chief Judge Rosen may designate."

In a statement, Rosen said:

In accepting this mediation assignment, my objective is to bring the parties together in a neutral forum, away from the glare of the spotlight, to discuss the many challenging issues facing them with the purpose of resolving as many of their disputes as possible.  I will immediately assemble a small team of highly experienced facilitative mediators from the public and private sector who have had a history of success in bringing parties together to resolve difficult, complex, and contentious cases.  I look forward with optimism and enthusiasm to working with this team and the parties toward this goal.
