Council President Brenda Jones
It was just a matter of time before the state and city had some differences over the management and policing of Belle Isle.
Christine Ferretti of the Detroit News reports that Detroit City Council President Brenda Jones said Tuesday she wants the state to undergo sensitivity training about the handling of Belle Isle security. She also wants conversations with the state.
She says that her call for such training comes after receiving repeated complaints that the state, which polices the island, has unfairly targeted some drivers — including the city clerk and mayor.
The News writes:
The concerns were raised Tuesday as City Clerk Janice Winfrey told members of a recent encounter with Michigan State Police in which she was questioned by authorities about allegedly speeding while traveling in her city vehicle. The disclosure prompted Jones to detail a separate story in which Mayor Mike Duggan was also supposedly stopped and accused of violating speed limits.
“The city clerk and the mayor are getting pulled over on the island? Are you kidding me?” Jones said, claiming more than 500 arrests have been made on the island since the state took over operations in February. “I’m just waiting for someone to pull me over."
