Detroit wants to hire more than 100 additional bus drivers, a move designed to upgrade a bus system that remains woefully inadequate for a big city.

The city this month begins providing commercial driver's license training for Department of Transportation applicants, a media release says. The  starting wage has increased to $11.38 an hour from $9.38 an hour.

The statement says:

The hiring effort coincides with other major initiatives to improve DDOT service, including the purchase of 80 new buses, improving security for riders and drivers and providing new transportation options for riders living with disabilities or who need transportation “gap” service to get to and from their place of employment.

“We are making significant progress at DDOT and we have a lot of opportunity right now for individuals who have a Commercial Driver’s License or are willing to let us train them,” said DDOT Director Dan Dirks. “Adding 100 additional bus drivers to our team would help us significantly toward Mayor Duggan’s commitment of having DDOT meet its published schedule as soon as possible.”
