Deadline Detroit is looking for the stories of city of Detroit workers and retirees.
These are the workers who are in the news these days because their pensions are at risk in the city's bankruptcy.
Earlier this week, Deadline Detroit published a column by retired Detroit Police officer Brian Lawrence, in which Lawrence, in an understated style, recounted the perils he had faced in 23 years patrolling the city. It received a huge reader response and we want to expand the conversation.
"Give this man his respect in the form of dollars and cents...it is his," one reader commented.
We want stories that reflect the satisfaction, and the horrors, of working for the city. We want to share these stories with Deadline Detroit readers as the public debate continues on whether pensions should be sacrificed to help Detroit clear its debt.
The requirements are simple:
1) You must be a current city worker or retiree, from any department.
2) Tell us about your career, as succinctly as possible. Perhaps it is just one incident that illuminates what it was like doing your job. Perhaps it is your motivation for going to work for the city. Perhaps it is a summary of all the years you spent on the city payroll.
3) You will have to use your name and we will run a photo that we will ask for if we accept your story.
4) Email us at info@deadlinedetroit.com. Include a daytime phone number.
5) Deadline Detroit will edit your story for clarity and brevity.
6) Make it interesting.
7) Don't be bashful.
