The battle for ultra-fast Internet service in Detroit just got more competitive.

Comcast launches service in the city with speeds up to 1 gigabits-per-second for residential users, Ian Thibodeau writes in The Detroit Newss.

The company is first to offer gigabit speeds citywide  and will expand to suburbs and others areas of Michigan in 2017. The cost is  $139.95 per month without a contract or a promotional starter cost of $70 monthly with a three-year contract.

Dan Gilbert's Rocket Fiber launched its fiber-optic gigabit internet service downtown last year and now serves more than 100 residential and commercial buildings in downtown, Midtown, Brush Park and New Center. The plan is to continue expanding.

Also about a year ago,  Lansing-based LightSpeed Communications began offering 1-gig access at Detroit Savings Bank Lofts in Capitol Park.
