Detroit's historic Corktown, known for its old victorian homes, will soon have an unusual addition: a $5.6-million development called the Bagley 10, that appears better-suited for Lafayette Park.

The 10-unit condo development has a sleek "row-house-inspired" design with floor-to-ceiling windows, balconies for upper level units and a courtyard for lower-level ones. Construction is to start next week, Crain's reports, with units leasing for $600,000 to $750,000.

The project is the first residential development by Christian Hurttienne Architects — the design firm behind restaurants including the Peterboro and Mootz Pizzeria and some so-called "infill" housing in North Corktown.

The head of the firm tells Crain's he's aware the Corktown project brings a surprising aesthetic to the historic district:

Hurttienne said he understands the condo's "modern design in a historic neighborhood" is controversial, but it would add "high design" and flair to a neighborhood ready for new energy. The project has been approved by the city's Board of Zoning Appeals and Historic District Commission.

The development comes as the area braces for Ford's arrival.
