A Commerce Township man faces charges of impersonating a police officer on New Year’s Eve in an incident that involved a traffic stop and following the motorist home, The Detroit News reports.

Mark Taylor is charged with false impersonation of a police officer and driving with his license suspended.

According to the White Lake Township police, a woman arrived at the Meijer on Highland Road and noticed a Ford F-150 parked nearby with its headlights on. After she left the parking lot, the vehicle followed her car and made a traffic stop with red-and-blue lights flashing,  Candice Williams of The Detroit News reports.

“The female believed she was being stopped by a police officer,” police said in a statement Thursday. “She pulled over to the right and began looking for her driver’s license.

"The driver stated when she looked out her rear-view mirror, she observed a male approaching her vehicle, wearing a white baseball hat, white shirt and blue jeans. The driver stated she observed the male stumbled as he approached her and she became afraid.”

“The driver stated the subject grabbed her left arm and she pulled away. The driver stated she was fumbling around in her purse for mace, when the subject stated, ‘Do I need to get my gun? What are you going to do, shoot me?’ The driver stated to him, ‘No, I’m not going to shoot you.’ ”

The man then walked to his vehicle and the woman drove off. He followed her home and got out of his vehicle, but took off when the woman said she was calling 911.
