More housing stock is coming to the Detroit River in an area that's only likely to become hipper as time goes on.

Mike Gallagher of the Detroit Free Press reports that the St. Louis-based developer Richard Baron said he expects to break ground before Labor Day on Orleans Landing, a 270-unit rental apartment project on Detroit’s near-east riverfront.

Gallagher writes that the project includes a series of low-rise apartment buildings on five blocks around the old Detroit Dry Dock Building, aka the Globe Trading Building on Atwater Street east of the Renaissance Center.

On top of that, there will be retail space, mostly coffee shops and restaurants, the Freep reports.
