Detroit Police Officer Daniel Wolff, who caused a stir when he called Detroiters "garbage" in a Facebook post that also bragged about assaulting citizens, has retired.
Wolff, a suburbanite and 21-year-veteran of the force, left this week to avoid an investigation into his social media comments, Police Chief James Craig announced Thursday afternoon, Motor City Muckraker reports.
Wolff’s harsh comments on Facebook came in response to a story by Steve Neavling of the Muckraker site about the high number of police officers who live outside the city. He wrote that Detroit is "just a nasty place" he would never live in.
Neavling then reported on Wolff's comments, triggering an investigation.
Wolff, who was on disability from the department, refused to cooperate and was given an ultimatum by the department.
“I told him he had until Monday at 3 p.m., and if he did not cooperate and make himself available, I would quickly suspend him without pay. In essence, that’s akin to a termination,” Chief James Craig said at a press conference.
In Wolff’s retirement letter, he insisted he wasn’t referring to all city residents as garbage, Neavling reports.
“I refer to the criminal element alone,” Wolff wrote.“I am referring to the same element wishing to bring nothing more than harm to our citizens who are good, honest and exceptional people.”
